Welcome to the Ontario Building Officials Association
OBOA Certification

pillar of KnowledgeAs a Professional Association, two of the OBOA’s pillars are Education and Training.

Upon completion of required training and municipal experience, a Government Member can apply to receive the professional designation CBCO (Certified Building Code Official). When a Government Member completes the required training but lacks the experience component, or an Associate Member has completed the required training, the professional designation BCQ (Building Code Qualified) is available.

Any move along the path to obtaining your certification should enhance your employment opportunities. Certification is a recognition and celebration of the professionalism and expertise of our members which is readily recognized throughout the building industry. CBCO truly is "The Step Above."

If you are considering entering the Certification program, it is recommended that you visit the Training Calendar page on our website to plan your training courses and to obtain an application form (see the link below). Review the application to determine which category is most suited to your educational background.  The training requirements of CBCO and BCQ certifications are nearly identical.  It is the experience component that sets CBCO as; "The Step Above."   The training component is comprised of four categories:

1.   Legal,
2.   Part 3,
3.   Part 9, and
4.   Additional credits

To add clarity, the Part 3 and Part 9 courses referenced are the "Detailed Technical Training Courses" listed in the lower portion of the Training Calendar and not the "Overview Technical Training Courses" listed in the upper portion.
